There are many ways to restore a tooth which is damaged or decayed. The choice of a particular restoration process depends on the extent of decay or damage and the tooth which is being restored. non-surgical root canal procedure is a procedure which has to be performed when a tooth is in a condition where the pulp, which is at the heart of the tooth, is infected. the infection of the pulp causes a toothache, sensitivity to hot and cold food, discoloration and a number of other symptoms. if the tooth is not taken care of in time, there are more chances of the infection spreading and the tooth falling out. therefore it is important for patients to call our dental office when they are suffering from a toothache, swelling or tooth sensitivity. through comprehensive dental check up our dentists at Sacramento office can recommend the right restoration solutions to patients’ problems.
The tooth comprises of enamel-dentin and the pulp. Enamel is the outermost layer of the tooth which is made of hard substance. The dentin and the pulp are protected by the enamel layer. The pulp contains blood vessels and nerves. The pulp is responsible for the healthy growth of the tooth. It supplies nutrition to the tooth until the tooth is fully developed. Once the tooth is fully developed it receives its nutrition from the supporting structure.
When a tooth has a large cavity which is deep, the pulp is under the risk of infection. When the bacteria come in contact with the pulp, there is an infection which leads to pain. The infection can spread towards the root of the tooth and then to the supporting structure. It is important to get the tooth treated to avoid spreading of infection to other parts of an oral cavity. The bacteria may come in contact with the pulp through cracks as well.
Root canal treatment is a non surgical procedure. The dentist does not make an incision in the gums or any other part of the oral cavity for the purpose of treating infected tooth. Firstly the tooth is numbed using local anesthesia. it is isolated through a rubber dam. drills are used to create an opening in the tooth. the opening provides access to the pulp of the tooth. the infected pulp is removed using appropriate instruments and a dental file is used to prepare the canals. the root canal is sealed using appropriate materials. the tooth is filled with restorative materials and a crown is placed over it to complete the treatment. the crown protects the tooth from further damage and aids its functionality.
Root canal is the space within a tooth that contains blood vessels and the dental pulp. The pulp provides the tooth or gives a hot and cold sensory function. It consists of 2 major parts; a chamber in the crown of the tooth, and a canal that go from the tip of the root to the chamber within the crown.
In most cases, root canal treatment is completed in one visit. However, in some complicated cases, a second or even a third visit may be needed to complete the treatment and avoid the future complications.
Root canal treatment controls pain and infection and therefore saves teeth that otherwise would have to be taken out and replaced with artificial teeth.
Most of the time, patients feel very little pain during and after the procedure. a local anesthetic is used while the treatment is performed to ensure the tooth and gum tissue surrounding the tooth are numb. It's normal to feel little sensitivity or soreness for a few days following the treatment.
If the tooth is properly restored in a timely way, and with good home care and regular checkups there is a 95% chance the tooth will be retained for many years, possibly a lifetime.
